Date

May 2023

Location

Versatile studios

Role

Cinematographer, camera operator, colour correction consultant

Director and VFX/AI Artist extraordinaire Freddy Chavez Olmos contacted me about joining him to shoot a project to test drive Versatile Media's Unreal Engine previs environment.

In our first meeting Freddy mentioned he was feeling inspired by a 1962 Masaki Kobayashi film called Harakiri, and showed me the final duel in the film. I was excited by Freddy's instinct to lean away from a modern aesthetic towards something classic.

This look has a lot of components, chiefly I see:
-Long lenses, compose for depth, using leading lines
-Stable dolly shots, typically stacked with depth to create parallax
-Lots of foreground elements, low cameras so the ground provides foreground
-Dutch angles when things get intense!

I am most excited about our character introduction shot.

300mm F16 with the sun behind him as he walks up the steps. It was a great shot to start the day with to get the team excited about the vision!
